Ask your users and if their ideal solution is a bit annoying for you to code, then suck it up. If you are really mimicking email systems then there are lots of precedents out there, all of which have had millions of dollars of UI design invested in them.
If you can't ask your users it may be smart to borrow some ideas from Outlook/gmail/yahoo/hotmail.
