You can only retrieve a mac address in javascript in IE 6.x. IE 7.x and any firefox don't allow it. This also doesn't solve my problem for AIR apps. I went ahead and created an enhancement request in the Adobe bug database, but nobody can see its status (including myself) since it's marked as security-related.
