I think you are flushing out the assumptions made in the framework about what is in global. There are probably fewer assumptions in Flex 3 than in Flex 2. I noticed that in Flex 3 we protect against borderClass being null. I don't see any protection in Flex 3 about not having a global selector, so I'm surprised you got past that in Flex 3.
