I tried to do this a while back and got it working for the most part (though I can't seem to find the code right now). I tracked down a JavaScript implementation of an expression evaluator that handled variables and functions (along with all the standard operators) and ported it to AS3. It took four or five hours, but was pretty straight forward due to JavaScript's and AS3's common heritage.
I can't remember which source I was using, but I specifically tracked down one that had a liberal usage license (it was for a commercial product). All I remember is that the comments and/or documentation was written by a non-native english speaker, so they were a bit hard to follow (and possibly not in english) in several places. Bottom line: google for "javascript expression evaluator" and start porting! Troy.
