Thanks Alex, that's extremely helpful. I don't doubt that you're correct, but could you tell me where that's documented? I don't see it in any of the API docs for the mx.modules classes, and the word "module" doesn't appear anywhere in the Flash Player 9 Security Whitepaper PDF. The same app is easily able to load and interact with Flash movies using SWFLoader from the same server, and without a crossdomain.xml file (which isn't accessed even when it exists) so none of this makes sense to me.
