You're wrong. ;)

Try setting width and height of the Hbox additionally to setting the
backgroundColor, e.g to 100%.

By default, width and height of HBox depend on the space its children
take up.

Subject: [flexcoders] Component styling question - HBox background
colours

Hi,

A fairly simple question: am I right in saying that the HBox and VBox
components can not have background colours set? I have tried setting
backgroundColor, backgroundAlpha, etc, but nothing changes in my
applications's appearance. The closest I got was setting the
opaqueBackground property but that did not apply colour to the full
height of the HBox, only the height occupied by its children.

Presumably there must be some kind of container that allows me to
designate a certain portion of the interface to be a specific colour
regardless of it's size or children?
