Normally I would use a bindable Array or ArrayCollection as the
dataprovider & then change the dataprovider when you get the result
from your http service.
[Bindable]
var mycbDataProvider:ArrayCollection
<mx:ComboBox dataProvider={mycbDataProvider}/>
then any change that is made to mycbDataProvider will be reflected in
your combobox.
