I don't' think you get an ITEM_EDIT_BEGINNING when the Tree gets' focus.
I think that's already a reported bug.

 

You should get an ITEM_EDIT_BEGIN so that may help.

 

Post the code for the example.  Do I have to use Tabs on FF or IE?  I
didn't see a problem with IE6 and no tabs.
