In actionscript, you can't use {} to bind.  You have to use
ChangeWatcher and/or other.mx.binding classes.

 

However, I usually just assign when the result from the server comes in
and skip binding altogether.

It's not ideal by any means and won't work for all situations, but
depending on what you need, it may be of use.
