I've done it, so I know it is possible.  Can't find the code right now.

 

If you have lots of similar values, the DG can show extra information in
a second column so you make better choices.

I think I'd make a composite control with a TextInput and a collapsible
DG, rather than try to put a DG under a ComboBox.

Sounds like LabelFormat is too limiting... like he wants to be able to
do clickable sorting & such, and the full-fledged datagrid doesn't fit
on the UI full-time.

Just my guess, sounds like an ok solution. Will be interesting to see.
