I know of no way to get JT65-HF to read the radio frequency except by using
one of the programs available on the "Rig Control/PTT" tab of the
Configuration form.  I'm like you, HRD is just too big but you can use a
small footprint program like DXLab Suites Commander.  Set up a virtual
serial port pair from your radio to Commander and check the Commander
enable box on JT65-HF.  It works fine here.

Maybe someone else has discovered a magic way of doing it.
