Brian,
You probably got the kit from Harbor Press. Here is an evaluation and
links to the supplier:

I also bought one.

I know of a nice company that sells custom made LPFs that will eliminate
the images. The preferred method would be a pre-selector that goes down to
those frequencies, but there is nothing that goes down to VLF frequencies.
I am in conversation with someone who maybe releasing a commercial product
soon. If there is a commercial vlf/lf pre-selector, I would like to know.
I recently got a kit for next to nothing to up convert VLF to 10 MHz (or
4MHz, xtals were provided for both), This included filtering (and an optoion
for extra filtering. It works very well, getting round the harmonic problems
inherent in the flex (1500 only???) down conversion at LF.
I can't remember the source but it was discussed (about 6 months ago
roughly) on one of the flex lists. Google may help.
What I'd like is to add an upconverter to allow me tor transmit on 137/500
kHz.
