I agree with you 100% Pete. It seems that except for the use of "Ethernet",
the article does not match up with the new 6000 series radios. Even the
data being transferred in the 6x00 is different. Sound card samples are not
being transferred in the 6x00 for processing and mod/demod in the host, all
that is done inside the 6x00 radio. I remember thinking when the QEX
article came out that it was interesting, but sort of tilting at windmills,
the whole UDP/uP buffer problem thing. I did agree completely with moving
away from USB, however.
The QEX article seemed to focus a lot on small micros and buffering issues
with UDP, which should not be a problem if the 6x00 radios live up to the
specs, and gig-E connections.
I've almost replied to other emails here, but did not, so this was lost in
the past. Let me jump on the bandwagon and pass along a HUGE congrats to
the Flex team! For a while now, I have been convinced that DDC/DUC radios
are the future of SDR. It seems that Flex has taken what they learned and
had in their commercial/military world, and transferred it to us amateurs.
Not only is Firewire disappearing, but the QSD/QSE is being supplanted. I'm
trying to figure out how much stuff I can sell, and when to "beg" for
additional funds for a new Flex. It may be a while, but the new rigs are
what I've been hoping for during the last couple of years.
Way to go Flex!

Subject: Re: [FlexEdge] SDR Audio over Ethernet, QEX Article
I'm doubtful if this is applicable to anything but low-end SDRs such as
SoftRocks or maybe as an alternative for the SDR-1000. The current Flex
radios already communicate between the radio and computer by FireWire or
USB. The new 6000 series does not even have a sound card or anything
that resembles a sound card and already has Ethernet-based communication
protocol with the PC to suit the functions of the thin PC client. It
was interesting that the article mentioned HPSDR too, since this also
has USB or Ethernet-based communication with the host PC and is also not
sound-card based. Makes one think the author's information was perhaps
a bit out of date?

Maybe a preview of the Flex-6000 technology??
