There is a phenomena in linear amps that are used to transmit AM: The AM carrier causes a "flywheel" effect which fills in the missing parts of the rf cycle. This allows operation at higher peak powers without i-m distortion being generated.
This does NOT happen in ssb modes. Thus you can run more peak power on any given amp on AM. I can run my SDR at the 25 watt carrier out level and modulate around 200% in the positive direction (the negative peaks dont cut the carrier off due to the operation of the balanced modulator) without any i-m generated.
