Per FCC rules, such an amp cannot be commercially produced.

Actually, you CAN produce such an amp legally. What you can't do is market and/or sell it in the US as a consumer product.

THP doesn't market in the US.
It's perfectly legal for you to buy one and have it shipped here. You can even buy 100 and have them shipped here, as long as you use them for yourself, and don't sell/transfer/give/etc them away.

Domestically: companies like Amplifier Research (http://www.ar-amps.com/) or Harris (http://www.rfcomm.harris.com/) will be happy to sell you a 1 mW in, 1000 W out broadband HF amplifier as a piece of lab gear or for export or for federal government use (which is not regulated by the FCC). Gonna set you back a fair number of kilobucks though... Here's AR's 50dB gain, 100W output HF amp:http://www.arww-modularrf.com/post/19.pdf (Harmonic suppression is pretty bad on this particular one, but with enough money, they'll sell you one that meets all the amateur band requirements)

The rules state a minimum of 50w drive. Those rules are now up for review per the FCC's decision.

And I can't wait until they do away with the "CB Amp" regulations.. They've long outlived their usefulness.

Bob

Your comments are sincerely appreciated. It really does take a Town and an
occasional Town Hall meeting! So MANY great contributors in all phases have
brought the SDR-1000 and SDR in general, light years in just a few. It
continues to be the most fun I have had in amateur radio life.

It is astounding to see how far we have come, just in this year!

Everyone keep up the Town spirit: no tellin' how far we can go into the
future of radio!

Thanks All
Eric

Let me add to Klaus' remarks. Thank you Eric Ellison for your continued support for several communities in amateur radio via Team Speak and other venues. It might be hard for those outside the users of these services to understand the large impact this has had on several different areas in amateur radio around the world. AMSAT, Xylo, and Flex have all benefited tremendously from this service. I really like Eric's prodding, cajoling, and jumping in with sleeves rolled up to make things HAPPEN in these projects. I also like his thick hide and how he can start a conversation that sometimes gets a mortar lobbed his way and he just keeps on ticking. People like Eric are often the true unsung heroes of these kinds of projects. It is impossible for me to say how profoundly grateful I am and how much I value Eric's aid, friendship, and continued support for our various communities.

Thank you so much to Cecil (KD5NWA) for stepping up and offering to help with documentation. I really look forward to helping Cecil help us (and anyone else who chooses to help Cecil). I personally view Cecil as "the man" on this now since he stepped up to the plate. Hopefully he will find this "slow pitch soft ball". I view the lack of documentation or the state of what documentation there as a failing. It is clear that the heavily motivated (Edson Pereira, John Melton, Bill Tracey, Bob Tracy, Phil Covington jump immediately to mind) can wade through things but it needs some clear effort. For my part, if I spent one more hour awake every day doing things, Stephen King would definitely be able to write Insomnia 2 so I am really grateful to Cecil. I just do not have the facility with the tools that would be required in a credible effort. It is almost torture to get through a ten page document that requires lots of other stuff attached and I have a documentation job to do now (outside of this group) that is more in depth than I have done in years, so I just cannot do another. THANK YOU.

Many should be able to look at the list and see that the next few months of DSP work is very stabilized. We are looking to accomplish a few tasks:

1) finish the implementation of the Phil AGC paper
2) add Impulse Response measurement
3) turn impulse response measurement into I/Q equalization
4) turn impulse response measurement into impulsive noise detection and subtraction
5) enable multiple watch receivers
6) turn on different sample rates

As such I am turning my emphasis to helping the various Linux efforts to get the appropriate parts of the 1.6.0 DSP into operation in their work. John Melton has done a lot of this and Edson Pereira is ready. The development for 1-6 will take place there and the be back ported to Windows. I owe Frank, Edson, and John all a public apology for my tardiness in getting to this point. I had to prioritize and between all of this, AMSAT, and my 18 year old ambitious daughter trying to get into a college of her choice, it has been a very busy winter.

While I hope to see many of you at Dayton this year, I will be more aligned with the AMSAT effort there this year in keeping with my new responsibilities but please make sure you say hello if you see me.

Bob
