For the past several months I've greatly enjoyed my new
SDR-1000. Not only is it a great rig but the SDR community
provides tremendous support to the new users like me. At the
same time Flex-Radio, the HPSDR group and individuals like
K6JCA are moving the SDR capabilities forward at an
incredible rate. So I’ve wanted to make a small
contribution in return for all the fun and learning I have
experienced.

Most of the time people think of remote operation as
something for those with remote sites on some mountain top.
But remote operation can be just as fun around your home
QTH. Personally I don’t like always being tied to the shack
when doing my ham radio so in this always connected world I
have been experimenting with ways to do remote audio to the
SDR-1000 without an extra sound card. By using VAC
(hopefully soon to be replaced with Phil Covington’s
vSOUND), a free VOIP program and XP's Remote Desktop I have
been able to setup a virtual shack I can carry around the
QTH. Recently Flex-Radio has posted a paper with my setup
on their Expert Setups page:

   <http://www.flex-radio.com/Expert_Setups/remote_audio.htm>

If you already have VAC 3.12 on your SDR computer and a
remote computer connected by a high speed connection (a
Wi-Fi connected laptop is perfect) you are ready for local
remote operation. So take a look at the paper and give it a
try. You may find yourself making QSOs while BBQing in your
back yard this July 4 weekend.
