OK. I jumped off the deep end and started playing with VAC 4.03 this
weekend. There are a lot of different settings perturbations between
PowerSDR, MixW and VAC - my dummy load got a workout!

My first impression is that some of the new features, such as signal
mixing (with saturation) between output port clients, volume control and
PCM format conversion between cables are very cool to use. I played
around with having the 16-bit, 12000 Hz sampling rate audio output of
PowerSDR "up convert" to 32-bit, 48000 Hz for MixW input. It did OK on
RX, but I didn't get it working well enough on TX to use it for everyday
operating, but I sure can see the potential. The conversion process
does degrade signal quality somewhat.

VAC 4.0 now supports ASIO, DirectSound and KDM-KS along with MME audio
drivers for client devices. Currently PowerSDR is only really stable
with MME. Once the bugs are worked out of the KDM-KS implementation
that is when VAC 4.0 should shine.

You can get VAC 4.x to work with PowerSDR using MME (stable) and
DirectSound (somewhat stable). PowerSDR doesn't work at all with ASIO
or KDM-KS.

One interesting note. I had to reduce latency (really smaller buffers)
on the VAC "cables" to get things to work right which was at first a
little counterintuitive.

I am still having some problems on transmit with drop outs and popping
during TX using 4.03 (MME & DirectSound), but not as bad as I was with
3.12, so I am counting this as an improvement, but not yet a win. I
think there is still something going on in the VAC audio stream to some
degree.

VAC 4.03 also looks "cleaner" on the MixW waterfall that 3.12. I setup
a second receiver to monitor the transmitted PSK signals and with 3.12 I
was seeing 2-3 side bands on either side of the carrier (see bug report
459). I do not see them with 4.03.

I am having no problem on RX with VAC 4.03.

I am working on a write up of how I got 4.03 to work in MS Word and
hopefully it will be done later this week.

I'd appreciate anyone else's experiences with VAC 4.03 that you would
like to share.
