Zack, It sounds fine. You are looking at this box as though it is your typical sound card and it isn't. I too got fooled by seeing no mixer settings for the playback on the firebox. Trust me, all is probably ok. Once you install the sdr software, it talks directly to the firebox mixer and doesn't need a windows mixer.
In order to see level (mixer) adjustments in the windows mixer you need to make use of VAC which is available free. This is so programs such as mixw and the like can map to it. Otherwise relax, and just go buy your sdr-1000 and get ready for a pleasing experiance.
