Well I finally got my SDR-1000 on the air. (I won it at the Orlando
Hamcation). My
first impression. Receiver is like WOW. My previous set up conswisted of
an IC R75/
IC 718 in transceive configuration. There is just nor comparison.
Pileups no longer sound
like noise and I can hear station I could not before. Not to difficult
to set up, but took my time.
I do have another PC on order that will be used specifically for the
SDR, but it won't be in
for a couple of weeks.
Some thoughts after reading the list. First I like the idea of
separating the DSP code from the
GUI. In fact I like the idea that some one put forth of even having it
on its own single board PC
along with dedicated AD/DA designed for this use, like the folks at
HPSDR are doing. Then
writing the GUI in some higher language such as python, perl or even
TCL/TK. This way
you would not have to think about whether the sound card used is
supported. FYI linux Firewire
is currently only supported by a libraw1394 for a limited number of
devices.
I do find the latency in the xmit audio (delay) to take a bit getting
use to. In fact I do not
use the built in monitor. I have my mic going into a Yamaha mixer then
into the SDR, it also goes
into another mixer that I have my PC attached to so I can monitor over
the headphones I use
to operate with.
I like the current GUI but some sort of scripting to personalize it aka
"Skins" would be nice,
but no necessary. Also some slider or some such the change the filter
skirts would be nice.
I do not necessarily want sharp skirts all the time.
Well that's it for now.
