I think I may have found an almost perfect solution to the bright blue light
on the 5000... I cut a small piece of black electrical tape and stuck it on
the end of the power button. Doesn't look too bad (especially if you trim it
carefully), and it still allows a little blue light to be reflected back
onto the front panel, so you know it's on, but it's no longer obnoxious
about it ;o))

YMMV

Tim is correct about the different schools of thought about leaving various
components on continuously or not. I am of the same school Tim is.

Some electrical & electronic devices have an increased current flow at
startup known as the in-rush current. Common examples are motors,
incandescent lamps, & analog power supplies. The probability that one of
these devices will fail is considerably higher during start-up due to the
electromagnetic forces produced by the increased current placing higher
mechanical stresses on the components. We all have experienced a light bulb
blowing out when we turn it on.

For this reason, I leave my PC on at all times. (Not to mention that I am
too impatient for Windows to boot up every time I want to use it!)
However, I turn my Flex-5000A off when not in use for a more pragmatic
reason. The shack is located in the bedroom, on my wife's side of the bed.
She complains that the bright, blue light keeps her awake at night.
