Hi Tim TKS for your comments and the link (both very useful). I had executed chkdsk before and conclusion was that the volume is clean. I finally decided to reinstall Windows XP. All went well ; only the operating system was replaced. No file lost.
The usual question about some drivers (M-Audio, N8VB, Edirol) not validated, but I just clicked continue.
