I am sure that some of you have been seeing me speak up in other groups
about small footprint computers that are available for SDR activities.

The beagle board (http://beagleboard.org) is a very powerful low power
engine based on the OMAP3530 from TI. GnuRadio is being ported to it
(Philip Balister mainly) and DttSP porting will begin shortly. Phil and I
will share the SIMD coding necessary. The OMAP3530 is a really wonderful
little processor. The processor is $60 in small quantities but the cost of
the Beagle board ($149) should tell you that not much is needed besides
connectors and conditioning (and they take their large quantity discount).

The processor has OpenGL 2D/3D hardware accelerated graphics and the
recommended monitor is a 17" LCD. It has an ARMv7a on it and will run
embedded Linux. It has a TI TMS320C64X 16 bit DSP on it, intended primarily
for video applications but it has a NEON Vector SIMD processor closely tied
to the ARM. This is fully floating point capable. TI has made the
development tools open source, free as in beer (but not as in speech), and
available for Linux. It has USB 2.0 on it and will connect to the Flex
1500. The Linux will support USB mouse, key board, USB Ethernet (100 Base
T), etc. The processor has camera hardware support and a USB camera could
be added. At 48 ksps, we are barely waking the USB 2.0 up on the Beagle.

By the time the Flex1500 appears, DttSP, GnuRadio, and some nice apps
(including a transceiver) will run on it under Linux. All code will be
released, as usual, GPL v3.

May you live in interesting times,
Bob

scheduled for delivery in early 2009, the FLEX-3000 and FLEX-1500.
Additionally, FlexRadio is running a Fall Special on the incomparable
FLEX-5000 series radios.

intended for both portable and fixed operation. Designed to fit in a laptop
computer case, it measures only 12.25" x 12.25" x 1.75" (311 mm x 311 mm x
44.5 mm) and weighs just 7 lbs. (3.2 kg). Like its big brother, the
FLEX-3000 is a 100W, 160-6m, all mode transceiver that connects to your
computer via FireWire cable. A built-in tuner is included at no additional
cost. Pre-orders at the INTRODUCTORY PRICE of $1499 (List $1599) will be
accepted starting the week of October 12th through November 30th. Delivery
is expected to begin in January 2009.

The FLEX-1500 is a QRP SDR in a compact package that connects to your
computer via a single USB cable. The FLEX-1500 covers 160-6m with power
output between 500mw and 1 Watt. Price is $499. Expected delivery is April
2009 or earlier.

The FLEX-3000 and FLEX-1500 both use FlexRadio's PowerSDRT software.
PowerSDR is world renowned as the premier SDR software package and is
