Reference the comments/suggestions I've received:
I'm getting the same range of comments(some via direct email) that I've seen before. Some say the FxK is not a good CW rig and some say they are running QSK at 50 WPM without any issues. Two people have commented that my computer is not up to the task. I know that 512 MB is marginal even for a basic windows system. But it is what I had and I thought I would try it before upgrading. I should mention that I run various digital programs, Avast virus software, email, and surf the net every now and then all while running PSDR. I have not had a single freeze or lock up in normal operation so far. CPU usage is normally about 25% but can get upwards of 75% when playing on the internet. Perhaps one of you DSP gurus might tell me if adding more memory will cure my problem. I would assume that if the sample rate is 96K and I am not getting any glitches that the computer is keeping up with the number crunching. More memory will certainly help in programs that shuffle data between the hard drive and RAM but is this the case with PSDR? If the radio works well on SSB and digital modes with the current computer why will it not work as well on CW? Maybe it will after I try some of the buffer/sample rate suggestions over the weekend. Thanks to all who responded. 73, Mark-K5XH <Original post > I've had a few months to play with my new F5K and I have a few questions about the proper operation of the radio, especially in CW mode. The computer is a 3 GHz Dell P4 (single core) with 512MB RAM with XP Pro. Everything has been working fine and I had no problem getting everything to work when I first got the radio. Last weekend I did my first software upgrade to the latest PSDR, FireWire, and firmware versions. The release versions - not any of the experimental stuff. All went well and I had no problems with the upgrades. I had read some comments (before I purchased the F5K) that the CW performance (in transmitting) was not very good. Others say it is great. Unfortunately, I am falling into the first category. My first QSO with the new radio was on CW. I was using my MFJ keyer as an external keyer to the radio. I discovered very quickly that I couldn't use the Flex's Monitor function to listen to my sending because of a delay between key closure and the sidetone audio. So I turned the Monitor off and turned up the volume on the keyer. This worked OK. I also tried connecting the key (dual paddle iambic type) directly to the radio. Again I found that the delay made sending correct characters impossible. But in this configuration I do not have the option of turning the Monitor off. I can't believe that such a fine radio has such a problem with CW. So, my question is what do I need to do in order to send CW? _______________________________________________ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List [email protected] http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to [email protected]
