Thanks to all for the help, both on and offline. No joy yet in my shack. I've tried countless combinations with no luck.

I am also a fiddler, a fairly stubborn one, and bear the scars from a life of banging my head against the wall, especially on PC communications problems. I've only been a ham for a few months, but have been working in data comm for over 30 years. This kind of interface should be a no-brainer, which may say more about the current state of my brain than it does about CAT.

It may very well be that I am not even trying to solve the right problem. I'm trying to learn CW and have reached the point where I am listening to the CW bands and trying to make sense of what I hear. I was looking at CW Skimmer for now as a way to help comprehend what I am hearing, like subtitles on a foreign-language film. Perhaps there is a better alternative? I've seen a stand-alone device made my MJC that you hold up to the speaker, but I assume there must be a more elegant solution.

Thanks for any advice.

Bill, others are going to give you far more erudite answers but my
impression after fiddling with lots of various 3rd party software add-ons
is that CAT control is just temperamental and a bit flakey. I don't know
whether this is coming from the radio or from the software or from some
evil miscombobulation between the two. What I
CAN tell you (and others will say the same--ask Brian about WSPR) is that
sometimes CAT will work and other times it has a sulk and refuses to budge.
Sometimes you can set it up perzactly like the wiki says and it won't
work. Set it up again EXACTLY THE SAME WAY* *and this time it will work
just fine. Also, some of the software (again, WSPR is one) will reset some
of its parameters from one use to another so that you have to go snooping
around to see what has mysteriously changed itself.

I tend to be a fiddler but what I have learned is that once I get a third
party application working, I JUST DON'T MESS WITH IT. Sure as I do, the
CAT will get snippy with me.

Very cat-like behavior, come to think of it. Try telling YOUR cat what to
do...

A wholly unscientific explanation, I grant you. My own hypothesis (in my
case) is that I have made too many snide remarks about ARRL's fawning
worship of (all bow) Hiram Percy Maxim (all rise) and his ghost is plaguing
my shack.

Your mileage may differ. I hope it does.
