The only time ALC is needed is if the exciter (transmitter) is generating too much output power and overdriving the amplifier. Since the Flex radios have very consistent calibrated power output, it is quite easy to set the output power of the exciter (flex 3000) to provide proper drive to the amplifier without needing to resort to ALC to prevent overdrive. To get best linearity set the Flex 3000 drive level to drive the amp to about 80% of full output on peaks (about 1dB down from full power). 1dB will not be noticed at the receiver but your signal will be a lot cleaner. Someone else commented on the lack of ALC input in the Flex radios. The point is, ALC is only needed if the amplifier is being overdriven. If you adjust drive levels properly to prevent overdriving the amp, you never need ALC. I have never had any problem using either the Flex 3000 or Flex 5000 with amplifiers without ALC. Now it is possible that you have heard that the Flex radios are not compatible with amplifiers. That rumor has been floating around for quite some time. It came about as a result of an output overshoot bug in PowerSDR a couple years back. That was fixed and there have not been problems since. -- Brian Lloyd, WB6RQN/J79BPL 3191 Western Dr. Cameron Park, CA 95682 [email protected] +1.767.617.1365 (Dominica) +1.916.877.5067 (USA) _______________________________________________ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List [email protected] http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
