Same here, I have lost a BUNCH of 2N3055 pass transistors over the last 30 years and equipment that was attached to the Power supply, Also the big Electrolytic goes bad and you have a lot of AC ripple after about 5 years of operation.
If your equipment is important to you rebuild the Astron P.S. every 5 years or so of continuous operation, you may be lucky enough to get 10 years out of it but your asking for trouble, this is why around here you never see Astron Power supplies at a commercial Mountain top site on commercial radio equipment. Most Commercial installation these days use there own design, I do know Kenwood systems use Duracom switcher Pwr. Supplies but these are a bit noisy on HF so don't play well in Amateur use. 73's Bret WX7Y -----Original Message----- From: FlexRadio [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ray, K9DUR Sent: Thursday, June 12, 2014 5:26 AM To: 'Dudley Hurry'; 'Dave Movius' Cc: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Power Supply Advice Dudley, I agree. Our club had an Astron RM-35 that had the series pass transistor fail (short). The output voltage went to the maximum provided by the transformer & the 2 rigs connected to it were damaged. The Yaesu FT-950 was repairable, but a Yaesu FM rig was not economical to repair. A problem with linear supplies is that if the series transistor fails, the result is a serious over-voltage situation. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info -----Original Message----- From: FlexRadio [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Dudley Hurry Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2014 9:48 PM To: Dave Movius Cc: <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Power Supply Advice Keep am eye on the analog power supplies , over time they will begin to lose voltage regulation and will need to be repaired or replaced. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ _______________________________________________ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List [email protected] To opt out of the Reflector: http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz _______________________________________________ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List [email protected] To opt out of the Reflector: http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz
