So, it's definitely spam. The SourceForge list servers do a pretty good job
of filtering (I see more of it than you guys as administrator). However, I'm
hesitant to restrict posting to members only. Here are my reasons:

1. It makes it harder for people with multiple accounts to post to the
list.

2. It makes it harder for people to ask one-off questions, which I
think is an important function of the list.

3. There's nothing stopping spammers from signing up, unless we either

a. Moderate the list or

b. Require approvals for subscriptions

Neither 3a or 3b is an option - it's just too much for me to handle. Sorry.

So my policy has just been to ignore the fairly infrequent spam posting.
It's really at most a few a week. If I hear from you guys that you'd rather
leave the list than deal with it, we can think about doing something.
Hopefully the SF mailing list filters will continue to get smarter and we'll
see less of it.

Oh, there is one thing I can do: if someone wants to analyze the messages
and see if they're all coming from the same sender, I can ban the sender via
the list administration interface.

Is there any chance we can make this list members-only, at least for sending
purposes? I like incomprehensible Cyrillic messages with potentially
virus-laden attachments as well as the next person, but it seems
preventable.

Thanks,

Tom
