Hi,

not only in Germany but in Europe building models with cardboard (strong
paper) is very popular.
There are a lot of people active presenting/teaching/discussion their
developments in some forums.
And here is how the modern "Kartonbauer" (cartonist) creates his models
- with Blender

Looking around these forums I got to a link to a russion internet-site
with a *lot* of scaled 3-d views of several aircraft (*.pdf, big scale),
which one also could use for our purpose. I just lost the link but will
search for it and come back with it.
