It sounds silly, but it's true: The TV Towers of Frankfurt and Mannheim. I have noticed before that the holes appear just at the places where two very high buildings are located, but initially, a coherence seemed too absurd to me. Now I have tested it: If you remove these two objects from the scenery, the terrain is back.
So this turns into a more concrete bug report: The presence of certain 3d models on a scenery tile prevents FG-OSG from drawing the tile. Since I have noticed this behaviour with two TV towers (near EDFM and EDDF in Germany), I assume that the problem is connected to the height of the objects, but this is solely based on observations and not supported by any knowlegde about the inner workings of the program.
