        Did you also install the *-devel packages?  For some things they are
the ones with the header files.  From your comments I think you've
already done this, but just to be sure check /etc/ld.so.conf and make
sure the line "/usr/local/lib" is in there. Then run "/sbin/ldconfig
-v".
