Yes, completely.  After years of aversion, I found that it was
actually quite easy to learn both because of the many excellent,
step-by-step online tutorials.  I *like* layers and masks in the Gimp
now that I know how to use them.  I even did a bit of script-fu,
modifying an existing script a little.

For some reason, the vertex smoothing is not making it through the
Python-based blender AC3D export script -- I have an e-mail out to the
script's author.  Transparent windows can come for free by using an
alpha component in the textures, but I'm putting them off for now,
since there's nothing to see inside the plane.
