Consider this pre-alpha -- I glued together a bunch of existing stuff
to mock up a sort-of functional 3D cockpit for the Cessna 172. You
can try it out with

  fgfs --aircraft=c172-3d

There are some important caveats:

1. Clicking on the instruments doesn't work (waiting for a fix from
Andy).

2. The instruments rotate with the 3D cockpit but they don't tilt with
it (also waiting for a fix from Andy) -- that means that you can move
the mouse sideways, but try not to move it up or down unless you want
to see the magic floating gauges.

3. The orientation is incorrect when the view is not straight forward
and the plane is not flying level (waiting for a fix from me, but I
don't understand matrix math well enough) -- that means that when you
look out the side window during a climb or turn, the model will not be
tilted correctly.

4. The 3D interior is fairly ugly right now.

5. This isn't *really* how we'll want to code it -- we'll want to draw
the gauges in the same scene graph as the 3D model (it's all just a
kludge right now).

Still, there is enough here to give a feel for what it will be like
flying FlightGear with a proper 3-D cockpit. I recommend using it
with the joystick in your left hand and the mouse, in view-mode, in
your right hand -- that way, you can look any way you want quickly
while you're flying. That doesn't work for people like me with
two-handed gamepad controllers, but that's life. People with rudder
pedals will be very happy with their purchases now.

A lot of the credit for this (the good parts) goes to Andy Ross for
making the virtual-panel patches.

All the best,

David
