This has uses for when you want to refer to function pointers or class method pointers in a flexible way. Bernie wanted this included so he could rewrite the flightgear event manager class to be a bit more flexible. I'm usually not an advocate of jumping on the hype bandwagon because it sounds cool and it seems like everyone else is doing it, but when there's an actual legitimate use, that's a different story.
