So I've heard.  The US army ran helicopter trials over several months
in the late 50's or early 60's, and DeHavilland Canada asked them to
allow the single Otter to compete on equal terms, even though it was a
fixed-wing aircraft (helicopters couldn't take off vertically when
heavily-loaded back then).  The Otter took off in the same (limited)
space and carried far more payload than any of the rotor craft, with
virtually no mechanical downtime over the months of the trial.
