You mean this: °? It's character code 176 in the ISO-8859-1 encoding (which is usually the default under X11, at least in North America, Latin America, and Western Europe). Different tools have different input methods: if you're using Gnome, for example, the fastest way is to open the Gnome Character Map utility.
