Funny you should mention that -- plib has a new (mostly undocumented) particle system designed for just that sort of thing. I'm not getting through to SourceForge right now, so I cannot give you a URL from the plib-devel archives, but look for a recent message from Steve Baker describing how the code works. This is something we could look into for smoke, contrails, and even clouds, though I imagine it would get very expensive quickly unless we use big, coarse particles.
