Didn't you say earlier that you are using Red Hat's GCC 2.96? Isn't
that the broken version? I don't know the details, but I think Red Hat
released a broken unofficial "GCC 2.96" about a year ago, whereas GCC
2.95 is the official stable version. (Or version 3.2, but that's a big
change which probably requires updating other packages to match it.)

Julian,

The first few releases of 2.96 were buggy, and gave RH a black eye. Within around 3 months, new versions replaced the bad ones, and have been pretty decent since. Human nature that the news of the fixes never got the publicity of the initial problem. Bad ones were around 2.96.66, if my memory isn't failing too badly. Current is 2.96-112.7.1, whatever that string of digits means. In any case, backing off the recent plib cvs changes fixed the failure.

Computers, like air conditioners, work poorly with Windows open.
