These may or may not be interesting, but here are some recent stats
for anyone who cares.
In the last year, the biggest month for the web server was September
when we did the 0.8.0 release. We did 180615 web hits in a single day
(Sep. 13). This month when we released 0.9.0 we had a day (Dec. 4)
where we hit 206997 web server hits in a single day. We were in the
middle of moving the primary web server to new hardware then, and dns
hadn't totally flushed through the system, so the old machine got
34167 hits on that same day, so really we did 241164 hits that day.
>From the ftp server stats, over the last 8 days, about 1800 copies of
the prebuilt windows version have been downloaded ... that's about 225
downloads a day ... and that's just on the primary ftp site not
including any of the mirrors.
700 people have downloaded the cd-rom image over the same time period
... that's almost 90 people a day. (I just updated that to the 0.9.1
version today by the way.) :-)
Only 55 people have downloaded the Mac version. That ought to go up
as soon as we get a 0.9.1 version built for Mac, and also as our Mac
support get's better. Previously even the prebuilt binary has been a
bear to get going. I'm trying to add reasonable Mac support to my
FlightGear cd, but I'm waiting on a 0.9.1 build before I continue with
that.
The ftp server has been pushing almost 12Gb of data out per day.
Again, this doesn't include any of the mirror sites.
The primary ftp server now has a user limit of 15. We run pretty
close to that *all* the time. Slots do open up frequently, but they
are also grabbed frequently. If you are trying to get through, keep
trying, or try one of the mirror sites.

I was looking at linux counter site the other day:
http://counter.li.org/
This guy is trying to get some sort of estimate of total linux users
in the world ... he presents a bunch of different guesses based on
various estimation methods. He concludes that if you get to pick a
number and pick the factor you multiply it by, you can come up with
any answer you want.
This gave me an idea. I thought it might be interesting to use the
flight simulator approach to estimating total users of an operating
system.
1. Determine number of windows users in the world today.
2. Determine the number of them that run MSFS. These numbers are
probably available someplace.
3. factor = Total/MSFS.
4. Determine the number of flightgear users running a particular
platform.
5. Multiply by "factor" to get the total world wide users of that
platform.
Ok, sorry for getting so off topic ... :-)
Curt.
