This ad appears in Time magazine, and is causing a lot of anger on aviation lists and from AOPA:
http://moleski.net/timemag.htm I seriously worry about the future of general aviation in the U.S., even though that troubled teenager who crashed the 172 into a building in Florida a while back proved that little planes like these cannot do much more than break a glass window. There's a lot of hostility down there, and perhaps projects like FlightGear can work a little to calm things down (by exposing more people to virtual flying, at least). Up here in Canada, things are going much, much better. We have a tiny area of new Class F in Ottawa around Parliament Hill and the Prime Minister's residence (CYR540, a 0.5nm circle around each of the sites up to 3000 ft MSL), but that's only a fraction of the size of the restricted airspace around sports stadiums now in the U.S., not to mention G.W.B.'s ranch. Otherwise, it's hard to see any negative changes since 2001-09-11. General aviation is central to Canada's history and the bush pilot is a bit of a national icon, so we have a lot of public goodwill to draw on -- I imagine that the situation in Alaska is more similar to Canada than to the lower 48.
