So, I am on the verge of 'snapping' with respect to our current aeronautical data, and am wondering how to proceed. I was looking at what at other software does for their aeronautical data, and most of the FS2k2 ones I know about are getting their data from:

http://www.navdata.at/

Now, those data sets are all being derived from the DAFIF, so it naturally occurs to me .. can we just do the same thing ourselves? Most critically, as far as I can gather, the DAFIF data contains lots of data we don't use right now that would be really desirable for me, such as airspace boundaries and classes (even the KLN-89b tracks those) in addition to a big library of STARs and SIDs (plus the airway data I need right now).

So ... what sort of approach should I be investigating? Would we want to support loading the 'raw' DAFIF data into flightgear, so people can just download it directly to update to a new AIRAC cycle, or is that way too much data to contemplate? I'm still trying to get a handle on the data format and how much of it is useful / useless to us at runtime, so any / all information people have would be gratefully received.

Also, if there's some other source for this kind of data we should be looking at, please let me know. Are there advantages to the data from Robin Peel that I should be aware of before I merrily start building replacement code? How (in)complete is the DAFIF outside the land of free + home of the brave, for example?

We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.
