Yes it was.  Actually most of the southern airfields were used by
(mostly) hurricanes and spitfires in the war.  They were there to stand
in the way of the German bombers enroute to London and the docklands.
My dropzone, Langar was used by the Lancaster bombers of 207 squadron
and then US and RCAF before it was downsized and taken up by the
parachute school:

Incidentally, spurred on by David's experience I have decided to try for
a PPL starting this summer.  I have a CAA medical on April 4 and
hopefully start flying in August at EGNF.  It will be very strange
repeatedly taking off *and* landing in a cessna!
