I have just added R/C transmitter support to the FlightGear base package. To make it all work, one must have a supported radio and purchase an RCJOY USB box ($90) as well as a cable (~$12) from http://www.leweng.com. This USB box works with all major R/C brands: Futaba, Airtronics, JR, Hitec, Tower Hobbies, and Multiplex. A list of the specific radios is on the Lew Engineering web site (see the "Support" link). The cable depends on the brand.

Ailerons, elevator, rudder, and throttle (channels 1 through 4) are supported. Channels 5 through 8 are used to emulate the four standard joystick buttons.

To work this out, I added the USB device to ~/fgfsbase/joystick.xml
  <!-- Lew Engineering RCJOY device for various RC transmitters.
  http://www.leweng.com -->
  <js-named include=
  "Input/Joysticks/LewEngineering/RC-transmitter-hitecLaser4.xml"/>

and I added the file RC-transmitter-hitecLaser4.xml noted above.

With the RCJOY USB box + cable and a supported radio, it should work for anyone.

Regards,
Michael
