Any such infrastructure has to support automatic update from the Government databases, The US DAFIF data is probably the best source, as the data changes over time. For instance official databases take account of: new airports and navaids, Chicago Mayors with grudges and other airport closures, continental drift, and magnetic variation changes, in the case of DAFIF, every 28 days. Robin Peel <http://www.x-plane.org/users/robinp/AptNavFAQ.htm> maintains a database where he merges the 'monthly' DAFIF with manual info supplied by X-Planerers (and I guess FlighGearers), and produces a new X-Plane database structure. If we wanted an XML version I would think we should try and convince him to generate it from his db. The alternative is for someone to set up that service for FlightGear, and maintain it - which looks like a big job.
