Just an update on this. I can re-arrange the default keboard (and presumably js - haven't tried yet) bindings from the default settings in preferences by entries in the a/c set.xml file.
This means I can change the brake set-up from one gear and three wheels, with a brake on each wheel, to four gears, with a brake on the first wheel on each gear (the brakes on additional wheels seem to be ignored), which is more appropriate for the b52, for example.
