In general, if things like your OS or your X-server crashes, I would look first to either bugs in the software/drivers or perhaps flakey hardware. At least in the unix world, an application should never be able to crash the underlying operating system. If the operating system allows an application to crash the entire OS, then the OS has a bug (or is probably not designed as well as it could have been.)
