Hello,
After i read the topic "Some European cities satelite photos" yesterday i had the idea to search for terrain data that is offered by my country (Germany). I found the following pages of the German Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy: Here are the links: http://www.geodatenzentrum.de/geodaten/gdz_home1.gdz_home_start?gdz_home_spr=eng&gdz_home_para0=gdzintranet and http://www.bkg.bund.de/index_english.htm Here you can get all kind of maps, including Digital Terrain Model data maps (vector data maps similar like vmap) of Germany. Those maps are available in different quality steps. >From 1:25000 to 1:1000000 One example: http://www.geodatenzentrum.de/geodaten/metainfo.meta_start_dataset?dat_datasetid=528&c1=1&kz=0&keyid=0&inf_sprache=eng >From that page: ----------------------- The Digital Terrain Model 50 M745 describes the terrain forms of the Earth's surface by a point set that is georeferenced in position and height and that is arranged in a regular grid. The grid width for this model with mean resolution is 1" x 1" (about 30 m x 20 m) in geographic coordinates. --------------------------- Scale band 1:30 001 - 1:75 000 Here's an example test data picture (Digital Terrain Model 1:50,000 M745 - DGM50 M745) http://www.geodatenzentrum.de/gdz/gdztestload.gdztest_beispiel?prod_id=15&gdz_home_spr=eng These are very exact maps it would be great if we could use them for flightgear. The problem are the distribution conditions, "normally" (general usage conditions) those maps cost money. :( But on the website there is a section called "Prices and delivery conditions" at the moment this part of the website seems to be down. :( It is linking to another website http://www.ifag.de/GI/Produkte_lief/Lieferbedingungen.htm and this host www.ifaq.de seems to be down maybe it is up and running later. The point is, i visited this page some weeks ago and read something about exception conditions for public none commercial use. >From what i remember there was a sentence that said that for special usage conditions (like the use under the GPL which is public but allows also commercial use) we should ask. So perhaps we could politely ask them, if we can get some small data amounts for free for a public project like flightgear. Here is the contact page (the url is very long so i used makeashorterlink.com): http://makeashorterlink.com/?Y22D12B95 To be sure we could wait a little until this www.ifaq.de host is up and running again to read the rest of that section "Priced and delivery condititions".
