A left click will automagically return you to the 'forward view' 

FWIW
It has been this way since the before the 'properties' driven mouse

A feature the mouse use to have that I miss is that the cursor used
to position itself to reflect the offset with respect to the center position
for the retained view.  I find this confusing esp in 'Yoke Mode' because 
there no longer is a reference point
