You would probably be *much* happier turning up your anisotropic texture filtering to it's maximum level. This makes runway textures much clearer when you view them at a sharp angle (like during take off, landing, and taxiing.) For linux/nvidia this is an environment variable setting. For windows this is probably a setting in your driver properties (just guessing.) It makes a huge difference if you have a GeForce 3 or better, it's an improvement, but less of one with a GeForce 2 or less. I don't have any current experience with other chipsets so someone else will have to speak for that.
