But it is not _that_ difficult. I've once flown a simple Bell 47-G
model _without_ collective pitch so you had to control the lift via the
throttle. Every time you wanted to gain lift you had to accelerate the
main rotor and - because people didn't have gyros these days - you had
to counteract with the tail rotor (much more than you have to do
nowadays when you simply have to eliminate the increased main rotor
torque which results in higher pitch).
_This_ is difficult - I can tell you. Flying a helicopter is not that
deifficiult today. The most dangerous parts are the blades that could
swirl around afer a crash ....

P.S.: I still have my 47-G - I had to redo large parts after the
carburator swallowed a snow flake and one main blade crashed into
the tail. I think I'll never fly it again ....
