While doing some research for my own website, I came across a couple of search engines that are free and licensed under the GPL. I haven't used them myself (yet).
http://www.htdig.org/ (unix or cygwin) http://swish-e.org/ (unix or Windows) Swish-E seems the more sophisticated one; it was developed at Berkeley. May be useful for the mail list archives?
